March 19, 2009 – With the start of the 2009 season only 2 weeks away, the entire crew at RebelYell Motorsports is getting revved up and prepared for the new season to begin. The crew is putting the finishing touches on the car for this season, and driver Nick Kocuba is getting ready to hit the track for the first time in 2009 at the practice session on March 28 at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway.
The 2008 season was a bittersweet one for the RebelYell Motorsports crew, as it started with the passing of Dwane “Pinky” Work. Duane is Nick’s grandfather, and was one of Nick’s biggest supporters. Dwane got involved in stock car racing when he and some of his buddies began to campaign the 097 car at Greater Pittsburgh Speedway in Clinton, PA. Duane’s involvement in racing is ultimately what drew the entire Kocuba family to dirt track racing, as his involvement is what got Nick’s Mom to the track as a kid. Later on, she took Nick’s Dad to his first dirt race and got him hooked… and as they say, the rest is history! As a tribute to his grandfather, Nick will once again carry the 097 inside of the trademark #10 on the side of the racecar this season.
With the “bitter” behind them, the “sweet” started for the RebelYell Motorsports #10 team, as Nick won his second career feature race, and the first in over 3 years on August 9, 2008… which was coincidentally Nick’s 29th birthday as well! The team would go on to have several more good races, only to have great finishes and possible wins spoiled by broken parts, or blown out tires. Nick finished the season in a career high 4th place in the points at PPMS, and 5th place in the Pittsburgh Circle Track Club points.
The team also visited another speedway for the first time this past season, making the trip to 250 Speedway in Cadiz, OH. Nick finished a respectable 7th in his one and only attempt at 250 in 2008. The team hopes to revisit 250 Speedway occasionally in the upcoming season.
The crowning moment of Nick’s 2008 season came at the PPMS track banquet in January, when he was awarded the annual Sportsman of the Year Award. The recipient of this award is selected by track officials and presented annually to one person involved with racing at the racetrack, and not necessarily always a driver.
Plans for the 2009 season are similar to the plans for previous years. Nick will campaign the #10 Clarkin Family Chiropractic, Colonial Beer Distributor, Hankey Farms Auto, Built Rite Construction & Restoration Pontiac Grand Prix GTP all season long at PPMS. Six division racing at PPMS Begins April 4th, and will continue every Saturday night until mid September. Check www.ppms.comfor more details. The car will also be at the annual Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Motorsports Day at Kennywood Park on May 17. The team also hopes to attend some races at 250 Speedway, and at Tri-City Speedway at the end of the season. Stay tuned to rebelyellmotorsports.com for more updates as the season progresses.
